With shoemaker royalty such as Yohei Fukuda, Hiro Yanagimachi, Norman Vilalta and Stefano Bemer present or represented, as well as a great number of other interesting exhibitors - some of which made their first trunk show appearances ever - London was turned into a shoe lover’s heaven for a day.

For a few consecutive years, Jesper Ingevaldsson, the man behind Shoegazing Blog, has been the driving force behind Super Trunk Show – the world’s largest classic shoe event open to the public. Up until now, it has been held at various venues in Stockholm, and it has drawn an impressive number of visitors and exhibitors, mostly a good mix of European names but some from as far away as Japan.

For this special edition, held May 13 and dubbed the London Super Trunk Show, Jesper teamed up with Justin FitzPatrick (of The Shoe Snob Blog and J.FitzPatrick Footwear) as the two main organisers. The venue chosen, The Music Room, is conveniently located at 26 South Molton Lane in Mayfair in central London, and is often used for exhibitions, sample sales and the like. With a stronger line-up of exhibitors than ever, the event was very successful and attracted around 800 visitors who together purchased shoes for around €62,000.

The two main highlights of the day were the World Championships in Shoe Shining and a panel discussion about the future of classic men’s shoes. The finalists taking part in the competition were Pete Bultitude from England, Anders Ericson from Sweden and Yuya Hasegawa from Japan, and the objective was to polish a single Loake 1880 Aldwych shoe as well as possible in a 20-minute time frame.

Yuya Hasegawa, the man behind Brift H and owner of three shoe shine bars in Tokyo, came out as the winner by unanimous decision of the judges, and was visibly pleased with taking home the title as well as a pair of Loake shoes and a shoe care kit from Saphir. Taking part in the panel discussion were Tony Gaziano, Co-Founder of Gaziano & Girling, Chris Than, Store Manager of Crockett & Jones’s Jermyn Street shop and Sarah Nelson, Co-Owner of A Fine Pair of Shoes, and it made for an interesting session which gathered a great crowd of onlookers.

Among the visitors were not only customers, shoe enthusiasts, bloggers, journalists and just the curious, but also many of the London-based shoemakers, for whom it was an rare opportunity to meet up and discuss, both with the exhibiting makers and each other.

Arranging this event in what many see as the Mecca of traditional shoemaking turned out to be a brilliant idea in many ways, and we would like to congratulate Justin and Jesper on a job very well done. The Swedish edition of this event will take place in Stockholm later this year, and is scheduled to September 2. Stay tuned for more information.
