Astorflex is a shoe company that apparently started out in the 19th century making wooden clogs. Produced entirely in Italy, the company takes a responsible, sustainable approach to its laid-back footwear. Described by some as “the best desert boots in the world,” originally founded in the 1800s, the brand’s sixth generation factory follows a greener line under its latest owners. Ensuring that each step of the production and sales process is as transparent as possible, the current incarnation of Astorflex features vegetable tanned leathers, water-based colors, non-solvent glues and natural rubber soles for a final product described as “100% ecological.” The lining and insoles are in vegetable-tanned calf leather, obtained by soaking the leather in a mixture of water and powdered oak bark and mimosa, without using dies or color finishes.
This process makes the leather healthier, htpoallergenic and guarantees greater sweat absortion for dry, odourless feet.
Most of the Astorflex soles are in natural rubber consisting in coagulated latex from the rubber tree (hevea brasilianis).
The various shoe parts are assembled using water-based adhesives
Familiar silhouettes are offered via two key styles. The aforementioned “Greenflex” desert boot combines soft suede with a leather lining, memory foam footbed and a comfortable crepe sole. The chunky “Countryflex” follows similar easy-wear lines, adding a central seam for a more rugged finish. Built to last, the brand has employed a construction process dubbed the “Ideal” since the early ’80s, an external seam edge bordering the sole resulting in a tough, everyday boot.
